When will the selfishness end?

Where did common sense go from the new generation? Is it ‘uncool’ for the new generation to think rationally anymore? When did, for instance, hanging out with friends till five in the morning become OK? Not just that, but arguing with them about it makes us look wrong and crazy.

You see, I was brought up by parents who had rules for living with them under one roof, and that to me makes sense. They gave birth to me, they provide shelter, they provide food, care, love, etc. They are my parents. Why wouldn’t I obey them? Try convincing a teenager these days using those arguments without them turning the whole argument on yourself and accusing you for making a big deal out of nothing. Nothing!

Personally, I can’t tolerate such behaviors if it was happening in my house, specially from people who aren’t even paying their own cellphone bill and aren’t doing their house choirs. Is it really that hard for teens to open up their eyes just a bit and realize their wrong doings? Why can’t they see that their behaviors might, in most cases, affect other people negatively who live with them under one roof? Are they completely blind to not be able to see their selfish actions towards other family members?

Many people say it’s a phase that every teenager goes through, but some teens seem to take forever to grow out of it and start thinking rationally and taking into account other people’s feelings. Sometimes it simply feels that their selfishness will never end.

As mush as I love the original concept behind Windows Phone’s start screen, I still have a few things to complain about.

There just seems to be a lot of wasted space on the start screen. You will notice there is a quite spacious black empty space at the top and at the right of the tiles. I understand why the top was left blank (for toast notifications) but it just doesn’t look right with all that space left blank.

The same thing applies to the empty space to the tight of the tiles. It just doesn’t make sense to me to see all that wasted space for displaying an arrow.

I don’t know if you also noticed, but the length of the home screen doesn’t fit the amount of tiles it can display. When you first see the start screen in its default position (scrolled all the way to the top) you will notice that your screen will only show the complete length of 3 tiles with part of the 4th tile covered where you have to scroll to see the rest of it. Even though it’s only a tiny part of it that is covered, that still feels like a flaw in the UI design.

Apart from those three design flaws (in my opinion at least) Windows Phone has proved itself to be the most enjoyable experience you can get on a mobile operating system.

I never understood why HP called their tablet TouchPad. Don’t they realize that a lot of manufacturers are just appending the word ‘Pad’ to their crappy tablets to lure in unfortunate customers? This is simply bad marketing which isn’t a surprise since HP is now the owner.

What pissed me off the most after reading the first reviews of the TouchPad is the negative feedback about the device’s physical hardware. The bulky heavy plasticy smudge-magnet they call a TouchPad. This is all HP’s non-creative dirty work. I am sure Palm’s team had absolutely no hand in the design of the tablet. This has HP’s crappy design signs that we’re all used to seeing all over it.

Haven’t they even compared the size and weight of their TouchPad to whatever is leading in the market (iPad, Galaxy Tab, etc) while the TouchPad was just a blue print? Who ever managed the hardware team should be fired cause he’s dramatically affecting TouchPad sales.

This is really sad news for WebOS. The operating system, as everyone including me always said, has great potential but the hardware has always been pulling it back.

Blog post titles should be optional

I always find it hard to come up with a blog title. It’s easy to come up with any content to fill the post, but a title is a bit more tricky. As a matter of fact, I am more than happy for my blog to automatically set the title to the post date.

It’s not like I am managing a company or a tech blog. This is a personal blog where a title is just as less important as the content itself. Plus, if you really think about it, ‘logs’ usually don’t have titles, just dates and descriptions.

You can take this rant as one of the excuses for not blogging a lot lately.

Cheers!

Back on my Treadmill

I need to lose at least 10 to 20 pounds before the summer or else I won’t be enjoying the beaches much, and we all know how important the beach is in a country covered in snow for most of the year.

So I jumped on the treadmill yesterday for almost 1 hour and also today for 45 minutes. I am hoping I would use it everyday after work for at least 45 minutes. It’s definitely a good start. And they say 5 times makes a habit, so I only have 3 more to go to make this a daily routine and part of my life.

I definitely feel great after the workout, specially after having that big cup of cold water right after I step off the treadmill.

Follow-Up #2: Shipping With USPS Sucks

It’s the fourth week and I still haven’t received my package yet. Honestly I believed that this will be the last week I spend waiting. Now there is only one day left till the end of the fourth week and the chances for the package showing up tomorrow before next week is pretty slim. On the bright side, USPS did update the tracking information on their website. Here is the latest reading:

Detailed Results:
  • Out of Foreign Customs, March 13, 2008, 7:51 am, CANADA
  • Into Foreign Customs, March 10, 2008, 6:45 am, CANADA
  • Arrived Abroad, March 10, 2008, 6:45 am, CANADA
  • International Dispatch, March 04, 2008, 7:08 am, NJI
  • Electronic Shipping Info Received, March 01, 2008

So now I know the package is FINALLY released from customs but no idea on the exact whereabouts. This is certainly by far the longest time I had to wait for a shipment coming from the States. For God’s sakes, the origin of the shipment is just eight hours away from where I live! It would have been faster if I picked it up myself. And you know what the worst part of it all? The shipper told me that he upgraded the shipment to Priority Service and I should be getting it in two to three business days.

As you can tell, I have been complaining a lot about this shipment and I am at the point where I don’t care how long it takes anymore just as long as the package arrives with no absolutely no damage to what’s inside.

So the question now is: Will I get to enjoy the content of the package before the weekend or will I have to wait till next week?

Follow-Up #1: Shipping With USPS Sucks

The package still hasn’t arrived, but on the bright side USPS updated the tracking information. This is what it reads now:

Detailed results:
  • Into Foreign Customs, March 10, 2008, 6:45 am, CANADA
  • Arrived Abroad, March 10, 2008, 6:45 am, CANADA
  • International Dispatch, March 04, 2008, 7:08 am, NJI
  • Electronic Shipping Info Received, March 01, 2008

At least now I know where the package is. But I still can’t help but wonder why it stayed for a long time at the Inernational Dispatch. Anyways, I am guessing it will take another two to three business days until I see anything updated on their website.

Shipping With USPS Sucks

Apparently I am not the only one who ever had a problem with USPS. After googling the issue I am having, it turns out there have been numerous victims out there.

Three weeks ago, I bought an item from ebay (which I have a lot of experience in). During the first week, the seller had a problem with USPS. Apparently they didn’t send him the right boxes so he had to delay shipping the item until the second week. So after he sent me the tracking number on the second week, it showed on the USPS website that the item was received by their system. A couple of days into the second week, the USPS website updated the information displayed and indicated that the item is now at the "international dispatch" ready to leave the country. And that’s where it is since then.

Two full weeks (that’s ten business days) after the item was shipped, the item still remains at the international dispatch. I come home every single day after work looking for my package and end up dissappointed. Personally, I hate waiting. Patience is something that I totally lack. And I haven’t ever experienced such horrible shipping through out my entire ebay history except for this time. It’s not like it’s the first time I bought something online and got it shipped from the States either. As a matter of fact, I bought an item that was twice as expensive from a city in California and it arrived in less than five business days through UPS.

So far, all I know is that the item is still stuck in customs waiting to be cleared for over ten business days. To me, that sounds like a lot of time. And I am sure that most of it is time wasted. I am hoping that I won’t have to wait another full week. Maybe I will be lucky enough to come home tomorrow from work and finally find my package has arrived.

Saving Money Sucks

I started saving money a while back (for absolutely no reason) and so far I have saved a good amount. But it really doesn’t help knowing that there is a large sum of money sitting in a bank that you have access to and all that money is yours! The first thing that goes through my head is "what can I buy with all that money now?".

There is always a tonne of stuff that you’re dying to get and can’t afford. For example, I would love to get an iPod Touch or a Microsoft Zune. I would love to go to a warm place for a 2 week vacation at a beach somewhere. I would love to buy a Apple computer because I just never used one before and for the fact that it is pretty. I would love to get a kick ass video card for my Intel Quad Core PC to fully experience Team of Fortress 2. I also want to get a 24" widescreen HD LCD monitor for my computer. Most important of all, I would certainly love to get a big widescreen plasma HD TV and mount it on the wall in the living room.

As you can imagine, the list goes on and on. It’s pretty much endless. And knowing that I have enough money to buy a lot of these items yet I am not allowed to use it is killing me more and more as I keep depositing more money into the pile.

At the end of the day I keep reminding and trying to convince myself that the money is better off used in a certain investment rather than spending it on consumer products. That investment could be an appartment or a house. It also can be stocks and mutual funds. Another option may be opening a small business. And that list as well keeps going on and on.

But you know what I do? I buy something cool from time to time to shut myself up. Like a Wii game or accessory. Most of the time I buy a new cellphone. Sometimes new clothes helps as well. Basically I try to do whatever is possible to stop myself from touching my savings.

So far so good.
